A letter to myself, from myself
Last year in APUSH, our teacher had us write letters to our senior selves. He delivered them to us this week. Here are some excerpts from mine.
Hey kid.
How do we become truly free? By taking a leap out of our "water" of history, religion, frame of reference, etc... and seeing what's going on. It's a little foggy in my head, I must confess, but (for you!) I'll try.
There is a tension between slavery and freedom in this country, and not just physical, civil-war style slavery. Slavery to culture, to youth, to image, to mediocrity, to the world. On the other hand is freedom, self-respect, love, excellence, and true beauty and worth. Choose this please.
...
To be more concrete- I know what is holding me down: fear, insecurity, worry, conformity, laziness, pride, mediocrity... the unwillingness to put myself on the line.
Don't be a hypocrite like Jefferson and the imperial U.S. Step out of your comfortable religion and seek after God.
...
Love God. Love people...
...
Be different. Break the mold.
God loves you so much. He died for you. To him be the glory and all myself and yourself.
