Candid Reviews: Rent
Last night my roommate and I watched Rent. I was not impressed.
There were three good songs in the whole song ("Seasons of love" and "Will you light my candle?" "Will I lose my dignity?"), and the show was all song. The other songs were not catchy, and were written in a rambling sort of way, when they weren't downright ludicrously bad. Roger's song "Your eyes" was so cliché, I writhed in my seat from embarrassment for him (If it had taken me a whole year to write a song that bad, I would kill myself... or just get a job). Also, speaking of Roger, I disliked his rock-star-ragged voice.
The little dialouge was stilted and rang false. ("I'd hate to see you pass up something that was good for you" I mean honestly...). The main three characters weren't well-acted, and the closing scene, where Mimi miraculously comes back to life, was laughable.
As for the content, I will simply state that if you are going to write something to intentionally push buttons, and justify alternative lifestyles– please, please, please write it well. That is all.
